Rumor Has It

Setting the table - november 2023

If you subscribe to our newsletter, you may recall November is the national month of gratitude. (If you don’t subscribe to our newsletter click here. It’s filled with lots of fun surprises once a month!) We have so much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving, and cannot wait to celebrate with loved ones. But, once the holiday season begins it can feel like there’s a bit of a snowball effect (pun absolutely intended) and as the days grow short, speeding towards a new year at Rumor Designs we find calm in the chaos of the season by expressing our creativity through beautiful spaces. This month, we want to share some of our designers’ tips and tricks to create a warm, welcoming holiday gathering with tablescape ideas.

Traditional fall colors like brown, orange, and yellow can begin to feel a bit boring and typical. Lead designer Lindsey Jamison suggests playing with shades like dusty pink in your dinnerware or flatware for a more unique setting. This isn’t your grandmother’s Thanksgiving dinner! “Different colors like pinks, light turquoise, or soft greens can create a whole new atmosphere,” she adds, “for example, mixing vintage soft green wine glasses into your fall color scheme is a nice addition.”

Lead designer Leslie Dapper uses the holidays as a chance to use a mix of old wine glasses handed down from relatives. “Second hand shops are also a great place to purchase something like that if you don’t have anything on hand,” she adds. If you didn’t already know, we offer one of a kind, vintage glassware at RD Home that might just be the perfect addition to your holiday table… Not to mention, these colors can translate to different table settings throughout the year!

Another easy-to-achieve idea we are loving is using butcher paper to line your table as opposed to your traditional tablecloth! “I have hosted a few Friendsgiving dinners and White Elephant parties where I find the most versatile + inexpensive way to decorate a festive table is with brown paper tablecloths,” says Order Manager, Kizzy Edmunds. “You can draw out each table setting, or print each guest’s name tag in a fun font, write a holiday message with a fun banner as your centerpiece, or just leave a few markers on the table for your guests to draw on their own.” Kids and grownups alike love the chance to be creative. Plus it’s a no fuss cleanup! “Adding those name tags to the table can also help with getting everyone to sit down when it’s time to eat…” Leslie adds. Setting your table in advance is also a timesaver and makes for one less thing to worry about when guests start arriving. Especially if you need to run interference between family members… I think we all know that feeling!

We hope you discovered a tip or two that sparks a little joy for you this Thanksgiving, but at the end of the day what your table looks like will never matter as much as the people gathered around it. But we hope we’ve shared a tip or two that spark joy and creativity. Wishing you a happy Thanksgiving from the team at Rumor Designs!
