This Downtown Designer Dwelling is an 800 square-foot retreat, built to extend the living space and accommodate a multigenerational family. Not your average mother-in-law suite or an oversized tiny home, but a free standing, carefully curated mix of both. Built just across the main house on Butcherknife Creek, the structure was designed with one spacious bedroom, one master bath and a large outdoor patio to enjoy sounds of the trickling creek and a bustling downtown neighborhood.

Some of our favorite details were simple selections which we executed in unexpected ways. We selected large porcelain tiles resembling stone and repeated them generously throughout the house, extending the path seamlessly out to the covered patio and through the large three-pane sliding-glass doors. We used marble tile on the fireplace and arranged the stone in a contemporary herringbone pattern. We selected tongue and groove white oak for the ceiling to draw light up and into the smaller spaces while enhancing the feel of the main gathering area and bedroom.

The family wanted to capitalize on the use of their new addition for entertainment purposes, so instead of traditional appliances, we designed a more practical gathering area with a SubZero 24" wine fridge and two spacious refrigerator drawers below. Added luxuries like an icemaker tucked within the island provided even more space, making the kitchen feel fresh and minimalist. Our client wanted something fun and different for the new home and had always loved the idea of bold colors and patterns, which is why the blue cabinetry and unique backsplash tile were an easy selection. Despite the alluring design at eye level, a vintage shag rug steals the spotlight with bright colors and inviting textures.

In the master bath, the texture story continues with Moroccan cement tile in a dark teal color and playful pattern, spanning the entire back wall, creating a focal point around the vanity and carrying the design into the shower. The vanity was custom made by local artisan Rod Williams and we selected a vanity mirror to compliment the rich wood tones with a leather wrapped frame. Textural linen blend wallpaper invites you in to the bedroom where a cozy assortment of designer bedding and plush accent pillows await.

“I love the way this project turned out and a major reason why, was having the opportunity to work with a great client who was willing to step out of the box and be open to more playful and interesting designs. They were so easy going and fun to work with, a true Steamboat family with elevated taste. From the ground up, Mountain Architecture designed a structure that would inspire our designs, the result is this incredibly stylish, inviting space you don’t see everyday.” Sierra Fallon, Lead Designer at Rumor Designs.
