As Rumor Designs continues to grow and evolve, it didn't seem out of place to tackle a complete design/build project. From start to finish, the process was initiated and supervised in-house. We wanted to create a design that showcased the most common requests we receive most frequently from our amazing clients (ie. bright open spaces, kitchens with thoughtful function, on-suite bedroom/bathroom, inside to outside spaces, generous mudroom and an oversized garage, to name a few).
We worked with local architect, Brian Moravcik. He helped us work through some of the elements we wished for but had to weigh against lot size restrictions and setbacks. After the design was determined, the Rumor team went to work selecting designer finishes like cabinets, lighting and tile to give the house a custom look without overdoing it. We left room for new owners to move in and create that final layer with a personal touch.
Our advice when designing and building your next home, get organized! Know your budgets! and always make sure your decisions relate back to the overall intent of the home. There are many decisions a home owner makes in the heat of the moment that do not affect the design or look of the home but affect the function and the bottom line. It's important to bring balance wherever possible.
A behind-the-scenes example: the air conditioning duct work was not planned from the start, but when the heating guys were getting ready to install on the main level, they asked if they could just run the duct work along the main kitchen wall. It seemed like the most easy and simple path but would shorten the cabinet wall. The Rumor team saw this as a design opportunity instead of a design dilemma. We came up with an alternate design. The new path became and amazing awning over the kitchen island. We ended up adding a beautiful new wood-clad accent feature while also solving the duct location question without compromising the kitchen cabinet wall. Those moments are very satisfying and keep us wanting more!
